St Bishoy Monastery
This was a view of the old chapel which obviously has been reconstructed over the years. A number of the current monastery buildings date from the 9th century but are still in use today. The Abbot of the Monastery gave us a brief tour as well as explained its history. He also showed us some of the very old artifacts and tools that are stored in the building.
St Bishoy is known as the Star of the Desert and the Beloved of the Good Savior within the Coptic Christian Orthodox Church. He was/is an Egyptian desert father and is said to have seen Jesus. His body is preserved to the present day at the monastery.
