Abu Simbel - Large Temple in Honor of Pharaoh Ramesses II
Abu Simbel is located near the south end of Lake Nassar. We traveled there by bus to see these amazing temples that had once been in the path of rising waters when the High Dam was built at Aswan in the 1960s.
UNESCO involved many countries around the world who contributed to saving these historic structures. The temples were actually cut into 16 ton blocks and moved up the cliff, out of the way of the waters, and put back together. The process took three years to complete and involved 25,000 workers.
The statues in front of the Great Temple are all Ramesses II wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt.
