And the wind was getting stronger . . .

  • Loading the Zodiac from the ship. Dry bags were handed down after boarding.
  • Off to our adventure on land.
  • King penguins and Elephant Seals - hugh populations of both on Salisbury Plain.
  • Ship anchored off Salisbury Plain our first disembarkment.
  • A male elephant seal - they weigh about 4 tons.
  • A femalea elephant seal (just under one ton in weight) with a nursing cub. Cubs gain about 20 pounds a day.
  • Fascinating creatures!
  • And they come in groups!
  • The orange color is brilliant!
  • Sleeping! Or grooming?
  • Penguins going into water to hunt fish and squid. Kings dive about 164 feet or more and remain under water for up to 8 minutes.
  • And some of them have full bellies and are coming back.
  • There are about 40,000 breeding pairs plus many immature penguins at this site.
  • Another amazing view!
  • Penguin has been fishing and is coming back to land through the ice.
  • "But you told me spring was finally here!" It started to snow and the wind came up!
  • Chllly day for a walk!
  • But - it was getting colder . . .
  • "Come on, guys - we have seen worse than this!"
  • And the wind was getting stronger . . .
